Opening Night Film:  “UCHENIK” (The Student)

Captivating audiences at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, this film from award-winning Russian director Kirill Serebrennikov, is about Veniamin. A teenager in the midst of a spiritual crisis, his entire life is turned upside down by his own interpretation of the Bible. While the rest of his classmates dabble in more standard teenage experiences like sex, drugs & alcohol, Veniamin’s spiritual crisis pushes him to adopt a very strict stance on the world, especially its views on feminism, Judaism & homosexuality. Soon all the adults are overwhelmed by this youngster who swears only by Scripture, but his Jewish-born biology teacher, Elena, soon begins pushing back…

This film plays with Russian moral wrestling that hits as hard and as heavily as a nastoyka hangover. Is it better to impart conventional wisdom, or to provide the intellectual resources that enable impressionable students to decide for themselves?

This thought-provoking film will be followed by the
